Herkimer’s charisma and physical courage inspired his militia troops during a bloody ambush. Conversely, St. Leger’s lack of leadership skills caused his alliance with Iroquois tribes to crumble, as well as duplicity during negotiations with Burgoyne after the battle.

Nicholas Herkimer

Herkimer was severely wounded during the 1777 Siege of Fort Stanwix (now known as the Battle of Oriskany). However, despite this wounding, he managed to lead his troops into defense despite their woundedness. This battle is considered one of the bloodiest battles of the Revolution.

Herkimer was an ardent Patriot who served on both the local Committee of Safety and was appointed a colonel of county militia by Provincial Congress. Additionally, he met with Mohawk Chief Joseph Brant to keep the Iroquois neutral during their fight between Great Britain and America.

Herkimer learned of Barry St. Leger’s plan to attack Fort Schuyler (now Fort Stanwix). Immediately he marched his militia unit towards them; during the Battle of Oriskany on August 6 he was injured but still managed to direct his troops with great skill despite suffering severe leg wounds himself. Legend says that when his leg had healed enough, he asked to be propped up under a tree so as to direct his forces instead of being incapacitated and giving orders from under its branches.

Herkimer managed to remain active throughout the remainder of the battle despite bleeding profusely on one leg and even as his brigade surgeon attempted to save it; ultimately, he died ten days after Oriskany in Little Falls, New York, and is buried there at Herkimer Home State Historic Site which is open Weds-Sat from 10 AM-5 PM and Sunday from Memorial Day through Labor Day with opening hours from 1-5 PM on both days.

Barry St. Leger

St. Leger was the nephew of Viscount Doneraile and an undergraduate at Peterhouse in Cambridge when he enlisted as an ensign in April 1756 with the 28th Foot. While serving in France from 1758 to 1759, he participated in two sieges: Louisbourg on Ile Royale in 1758 and Wolfe’s expedition against Quebec in the same year. Later promoted as central on 16 August 1762, he served at Fort Stanwix as brigade-major as part of their preparation to march to Montreal from Fort Stanwix during its siege as part of Wolfe’s expedition against Quebec that year.

St. Leger was in command of Gen. Burgoyne’s three-pronged New York invasion force yet underestimated Americans’ capacity to defend themselves. His attempt at forcing surrender was foiled by low morale and Benedict Arnold’s approach from the east.

At 10 p.m. on August 10, St. Leger sent a message to Col. Gansevoort requesting they negotiate a three-day truce, leading a detachment through American lines via cedar swamp. While in combat paused for some time in Oriskany village, Lieutenant Levi Stockwell from Third New York militia managed to sneak through American lines and seize a supply train at Oriskany village before eventually taking it back with them back to Lake Oneida several hours later.

Burgoyne

Burgoyne is best known for his role in the American Revolutionary War. He devised and led an invasion plan from Canada designed to split New England off from its colonies and end rebellions therein. Although initially successful, his plan quickly unraveled due to superior forces led by American General Horatio Gates at Saratoga on 17 October 1777.

Burgoyne was born and educated at Westminster School. Following service as a cornet in the horse guards, he obtained a commission with the 1st Royal Dragoons in April 1745, soon achieving lieutenant and captain status by year’s end. Additionally, he participated in raids along the French coastline during Europe’s Seven Years’ War.

John met and began courting Lady Charlotte Stanley, daughter of one of his school acquaintances and sister to James Strange (his future father-in-law). Although Charlotte’s father did not give his blessing for them to marry in 1743, they nonetheless eloped without him knowing. However, soon after that, he amassed large gambling debts that required him to sell off his commission in 1747.

As soon as war broke out in 1775, he was sent with William Howe and Henry Clinton to Boston to assist with managing the situation. He stayed until the Bunker/Breed’s Hill battle before heading back home in November 1775.

Oriskany

At Oriskany in 1777, a combined force of British Tories, Mohawks, and Senecas led by Sir John Johnson ambushed an American patriot militia of 2,000 in a marshy ravine for six hours of intense combat fought over marshes in an upland terrain. Although all participants in this victory were North Americans (General Herkimer died soon after that from his wounds), this victory marked one of only a handful of occasions where all participants in a revolutionary conflict were actually North Americans!

Rooks (DD-804), on its inaugural day on station, launched airstrikes against supply dumps near Pyongyang as well as railroad tracks and facilities along the northern coast of the peninsula. A Skyraider from VA-923 experienced mechanical failure requiring Lcdr. Willis E. Radebaugh to ditch his aircraft at sea before being rescued by Rooks’ helicopters (DD-804).

Oriskany resumed combat operations after a short stay at Yokosuka on 4 December. Her F9F Panthers and Skyraiders attacked rail cars, dock facilities, and boxcars along the north coast of the peninsula before bombing and strafing enemy supplies at Pyongyang and Wonsan.

After an exhausting week of in-country strikes, Oriskany departed for Subic Bay and Cubi Point for repairs and pilot qualifications on its CVG-102 fleet. Unfortunately, an A-3B Skywarrior tanker from VF-103 suffered catapult bridle failure during this break in operations and crashed into the water, only for its crewmembers to be saved by Worden (DLG-18). Later in the fall, Oriskany conducted voyage repairs as well as pilot qualification qualifications on her CVG-102 pilots.
