Error 404: How to Fix It

Finding a website free of mistakes is challenging. This typically occurs because website owners are either oblivious to the existence of any faults on their site or do not place a high enough priority on fixing such errors. Web designers may overlook these problems frequently because they don’t see them as critical. The 404 error is one of the most typical website malfunctions.

Error 404: What Does That Mean?

If a user enters a URL that does not exist on the site, the server cannot redirect them. This is an example of the variety of mistakes that could exist on the site. Error 404 indicates that the specified page could not be located. That’s why it’s labeled as a “404” error. If a user tries to access a page that does not exist, they will see this error.

When websites are revamped, many pages undergo revisions. Some of your former site’s pages may have vanished when this happens. If this happens, returning users may be frustrated when they cannot access the previously-visited page. The server will return a 404 Not Found message in this case. It’s not uncommon for people to grossly underestimate the impact of an error like this on their company. If users encounter this error, they can safely assume the site is unavailable.

Even search engines will give up on your site if they encounter an error like this during a crawl. This can significantly reduce your site’s visibility in search engines.

How do you repair a 404 error?

An error code 404 can be fixed in several ways. It all depends on what went wrong:

• A 301 redirect can be used to permanently reroute traffic from an old URL to a new one if a change in the URL caused the problem. Any user trying to view the obsolete page will be forwarded to the updated one if you do this.

• If incorrectly linked pages on the site create the error, fixing the link may solve the problem.

If your site has been certified by Google Webmaster Tools, the search engine will provide you with a report detailing any 404 problems it has discovered. You can fix the mistakes by referring to the list.

• You can use software like Xenu Link Sleuth or the Microsoft IIS SEO Toolkit to inspect your site for problems and implement fixes. You can download and use both of these programs at no cost.

• You might not always be able to find the correct link to the troubleshooting page. This can occur if another website incorrectly links to a page on your domain. In such cases, a personalized 404 page could be displayed.

Define a personalized “404 Not Found” page.

You can create your own 404 error page and host it on your site. When visitors to your site try to access a page that does not exist, they will be redirected to this page. The design of the bespoke 404 page is entirely up to you. Therefore, you are free to express your artistic side by making your own unique 404 error pages.

What to include in your own personalized 404 error page:

• It needs to have the same aesthetic as the website.

• It should apologize to the visitor for the inconvenience.

The sitemap should be accessible from there.

• It must take you to the main page of the website.

• It has to have links to the site’s other major sections.

• Include a site search bar on your custom 404 error page whenever possible. Visitors can use this feature to navigate the site more easily.

What goes into making a personalized “page not found” error message?

To have the various search engines and browsers recognize your custom 404 page, you must first submit it to the server. Microsoft IIS Servers require the Internet Service Manager to be launched. When it’s open, go to the “properties” menu and pick “Custom Errors” from the drop-down list of radio buttons. Once this is done, you can scroll down until you find the document that corresponds to your page. You can upload a new file or make changes to the current one.

The custom 404 page for a Unix server must be named 404. html. After this is complete, the htaccess file must be updated to include all the necessary commands. Doing so will forward all 404 and 403 errors to the specified page.

Although most visitors probably won’t notice a difference if you don’t resolve all the 404 errors on your site, many web design firms worldwide believe it can improve your site’s speed if you do. Therefore, fixing these issues is crucial to your site’s long-term health and appeal.
